Cockerill says Leicester Tigers will spend money in transfer window
Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Leicester Tigers is in need of some high quality reinforcements and will not back down from spending money to plug the holes in the squad, according to Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill.
The Leicester boss has identified centre and full back positions as two areas that need to be addressed immediately and has said that he has been speaking to Aaron Mauger, who will take up the head coach’s responsibilities at the club next season as they decide on squad strengthening. The pair has already come up with two key areas that need to be addressed and according to Cockerill, the board has given them the green signal to spend money where it needs to be done.
He said that the Leicester Tigers is willing to spend a considerable amount of cash on the right person if they find him to be a good fit for the side. He added that they are looking at the midfield area and full back position and mentioned that the team could certainly use some gold dust players in those positions.
He mentioned that finding the right player is one thing, but affording them might be another challenge. The team has struggled throughout the season with injuries to key midfield personnel including Ant Allen and Manu Tuilagi and with the long absences of these two, they have taken the field together just once out of the 30 matches the team has played this season.
At full back, with Blaine Scully and Mat Tait already confirming their departures, the Leicester Tigers need good players in that position as well. Cockerill said, however, that they will not throw money at panic buys and anyone who comes in will be deserving of a place in their squad, adding that there will be no panic buys.
